The Fixteri baler by Biotukki has been developed for the baling of
whole trees harvested from thinning. Its operation allows the bundling
of individual pieces of stem wood.
The baler has a continuous
operating principle and its binding and compressing phases facilitate
the simultaneous handling of raw materials intended for different
purposes of use.
According to the company, the following are the benefits of baling whole trees:
- There are no impurities in the chip material, when felling and baling are done at the same run time.
- Felling is effective, because it is not necessary to carry out
longitudinal cutting with the felling head. The fed timber doses are
processed automatically by the Fixteri.
- The baling method is
well suited to an entrepreneur-driven business model where the stand
marked for cutting is being purchased and harvested by the company
itself. From the roadside the bales are sold to various locations of
use.
- The short-distance haul of bales will be sped up when
the load is composed of 25-30 bales. The size of a bale is approx. 0.5
solid cubic meters.
- Energy bales dry when being stored over
the summer, and the moisture content is reduced below 35 %, the energy
content of a bale being then approx.1 MWh.
- In case of
long-distance hauls it is possible to obtain full weights. Dry bales
can be transported in a timber truck in bundles of 6, the total of 100
-106 bales.
- In rail transports, bales of merchantable wood allow 100 % efficiency.
Integrated merchantable and energy wood harvesting method
A new method enables contractors to adopt a new kind of harvesting
method that allows the felling of merchantable and energy wood for the
forest and energy industry in locations that would otherwise require a
preliminary clearance to be carried out by traditional methods.
In
this method trees are baled entirely at renovation and first clearance
sites. At the site bales of merchantable wood are made of softwood,
where the share of merchantable wood amounts to approx. 70 %, and that
of energy wood to 30 % (branches and needles).
Pulp and energy
cuts are not separated from the bales of merchantable wood until in the
debarking drum at the pulp mill. Bales of merchantable wood have been
used by UPM and Stora Enso.
Trees with small diameter are also being cut at the felling sites, and they are baled into energy wood bales.
The
logistics benefits pertaining to this method are derived from baling,
because it makes short- and long-distance hauls more effective
facilitating also effective railroad transports. Handling of energy
bales will become more effective, when chipping or crushing can be
carried out at the site of usage.
In this method both felling and baling are done at the same run time.
